1:42 pm - Semi-Annual Update
My estimate is that three people will read this entry...and I'm fine with that.

I am no longer in Japan, in fact, I haven't been their for two months and five days.  I transferred from USS COWPENS  (CG 63) at the end of April, and spent a few glorious weeks on Catalina, during which time I saw Fletcher graduate from CMA, visited Lyle in Carson, and drove across the US with Fletch in a stationwagon.  Japan was a difficult place to live, not because it's not beautiful, nor are the people unfriendly, but the Navy makes it painful.  Despite the difficulty of procuring food, gas, disposing of trash, etc., I have started to miss Japan very much, and would like to visit again in the fairly near future.  I will, however, never again volunteer to be Forward Deployed in the Seventh Fleet  and would offer the same advice to the Thin Mint Stalker.  COWPENS successfully passed ULTRA-C, E, S, INSURV, and 3MC within a two month time frame, which is impressive by any fleet's standards.

I learned a ton on COWPENS, but since coming to South Carolina learned a lot in the City of Cowpens, the ship's namesake.  The people there are the nicest I've ever met, and make service in the Far East worth every ounce of pain associated with the ship/Navy/whatever.

Nuclear Power School is awesome.  It's nice to be back in the classroom.  After a three weeks of Calculus and Physics, I think I understand both better than I ever did in college--in short, the instructors here are terrific.  I'm settled in a great two bedroom apartment, so if any of you (three) are in Charleston, please drop me a line if you need/want lodging.

Have a great day, take care, and God Bless.  DSC

I've been delinquent, so here's a quick update:

-SWO qualified last Friday, right before getting underway for ULTRA, which was likely the most painful week underway EVER--I would much rather spend a month underway, than deal with another ULTRA...to bad we do it again this week!
-Still looking to transfer in April.
-Just returned from an amazing two days in Hakone. Hakone is home to several very quaint train lines, cable cars/trams, a huge funicular, and the world's BEST Open Air Museum.
-Open air museum is pretty modern, totally lacking in anything by Rodin (my favorite), but has a great Picasso Gallery, the coolest stained-glass tower ever, and a foot bath...that's right, foot bath. It was snowing, and here were five white people with their pants rolled up in this sulfur-powered trough of hot water with mangos and papayas floating around.
-I like to pretend that when looking at Picasso, they mix some of his Middle School/High School projects in:
"Picasso--age four."
"Picasso--shop class--tenth grade."
"Picasso--mother's day--third grade"
They also traced a little bit of the life of Picasso with photos. My favorite was the picture of him in his late fifties, in his boxers working on...some kind of plate: "Picasso--Distraced while adjusting the thermostat."
-Also found (with help) a great, and very reasonable, Mexican restaurant on top of a bank.
I missed my December survey, so I'm stealing Mary Beth's:

1. Who was the last person to call you baby?
I think my Gramma...in October. I used "baby" this week, but I think in a different context, "GM2, stop being such a whiny baby and get this crud cleaned up right now."

2. When shopping at the grocery store, do you return your cart?
Yes--though I can count the number of times I've used a cart in the last eighteen months on one hand.

3. If you had to kiss the last person you kissed, would you?
N/A.

4. Has someone ever sang a song to you?
I think this should be "sung," but yes.

5. Do you play Sudoku?
No.

6. If abandoned alone in the wilderness would you survive?
In an essay I wrote for Mr. Herbst, I not only survived, but crossed the United States via Death Valley in three pages, so yes.

7. Have you danced in the rain?
Yes.

8. Would you consider yourself a jock/prep/goth/emo/gangster?
Not necessarily a gangster, but a GANGASTA! ...which is how my guys came to call me, "Fat Daddy." This, by the way, totally baffles my stateroom mates. "Hi, Mr. Ortiz, is Fat Daddy around, sir?"
"What? Who?"
"Mr. Canby."
"Mr. Canby is Fat Daddy? Who IS this?"
"Big T."
"Oh..WHAT?"
"Sir, please put Fat Daddy on."

9. Ever been to the beach?
YES!

10. Do you like cheese?
YES! I had a block for lunch last week...which probably isn't healthy.

11. Have you ever been to the emergency room?
No.

12. Do you like hot or cold weather more?
Until last week, I thought cold, but then I stood in the rain with a 26 degree wind chill, and really wanted summer to come back. On the other hand, it snowed a little in Hakone, and I was prepared, and it was awesome...so I'll stick with cold. "There's no bad weather, only poor preparation." and "There's never a bad time to ride."

13. How many different kinds of meat have you eaten?
Several, and I am very proud to be able to include kangaroo and dog on that list.

14. Is there something else you would rather be doing right now?
I want to be sleeping, but I'm wired.

15. Do you like winter?
I do, but I really like biking into work wearing shorts.

16. Have you wiped a booger under your desk?
No.

17. Do you have a secret crush?
Not one that's particularly realistic...

18. If your house was on fire, what would be the first thing you would do?
Call the ship, and let them know 1) to send help, and 2) I'm going to be late.

19. Would you get plastic surgery?
No.

20. Who do you text the most?
Mike Byrne.

21. What color are your eyes?
Blue. Which reminds me...Vladimir Putin is the Man of the Year for TIME--who would have thought!? That guy has some scary eyes, and I tried doing the cold stare he's got going on the cover, but I can't get it right. My next tangent, is that I read Inkheart a couple weeks ago, and when I imagined Capricorn, I pictured Vladimir Putin. Even so, he's sort of a twisted hero of mine...Vladimir Putin, not Capricorn...

22. How tall are you?
70". I have lost 1.5" since joining the Navy.

23. Do you wish you had smaller feet?
No.

24. Has a rumor been spread about you?
My guys started some pretty amazing ones, mostly about my non-existent love-life. In the ship rumor mill, I've dated an engaged enlisted Sailor, a married officer, my relief, and a man...in about three months.

25. Have you written a secret admirer letter?
No.

26. Ever fallen for your best friend?
Kyle is a total stud.

27. Age you lost your virginity?
In the Combat Systems Maintenance Center:
[Total silence]
"Mr. Canby, are you....pure of body?"
"What? Yes. Excuse me?"
"Okay, thanks."
"Are there any other personal questions you'd like to ask me FC2?"
"No, that's good."

29. Favorite Ex?
Favorite ex-crush?

32. Would you rather give or recieve?
I love giving, but Japan is screwing that up. I promise, that I will send out my Christmas gifts before I transfer.

33. Do you prefer to sleep or eat?
Sleep...although, I had some amazing meals this week.

35. How long does it take you in the shower?
4 min.

Project Runway.

The Jungle Book.

38. Do you illegally burn music?
No.

I was underway for 20 hours, then we pulled in, I went home, and passed out in my recliner.

41. Last sporting event attended?
Yokohama Baystars baseball game!

42. Have you been to an IMAX theater?
Yes.

43. Was your mom a cheerleader?
No.

45. What is your middle name?
Scott

47. How many hours of sleep do you get a night?
From Monday to Friday last week, I go nine hours of sleep...TOTAL. AND, with nine hours of sleep, I went to general quarters twice, coordinated an abandon ship effort, trained a new conning officer, and did torpedo and missile evasion...three times. My tragic downfall, was that I hit a simulated mine, based on a doctrine dispute with our Operations Officer.

49. What do you buy at the Movies?
So, the beauty of being in the Navy, is that the movies are subsidized by MWR...which means the movie ticket is $2.00, Popcorn-$1.50, Neccos-$0.50, Water-$0.50.

50. Do you know how to play poker?
Nope.

51. Do you wear your seatbelt?

Underway, cotton pajama pants, long sleeved shirt.

53. Anything big ever happen in your town?
I'm sure they do, but I'm really not here often...

54. Is your hair straight or curly?
Short.

55. Is your tongue pierced?
Nope.

56. Do you like Liver and Onions?
Onions are awesome, and I go back and forth on liver. I had it from a skewer at a Brazilian place last week, and it was pretty good, but normally not so much.

57. What is your favorite sushi?
I like salmon sashimi...actually, most sashimi's pretty good--the sushi doesn't work so well for me.

58. Do you like funny or serious people better?
I need the funny people.

59. Ever been to Hollywood?
Hollywood scares me a lot. Baltimore, downtown DC, LA, San Francisco, Tokyo, Hong Kong are all less-scary than Hollywood.

60. Who is on your mind right now?
Mom, Dad, and Fletch.

61. Any plans for tonight?
Sleep soon.

62. Last party attended?
SWO Party! The last three weekends have really been the best ones ever. The next eight or ten, not shaping up so well. Before the SWO Party, we forced a tacky-Christmas-Sweater Theme on our XO's Christmas Eve party. He kind of overlooked the first tacky sweater, but after the fifth one of us showed up wearing attrocious sweaters we bought in the old-lady section of the NEX, he kind of wigged out--perfect!

63. Do you hate school?
No, send me back, please.

64. What do you and your parents fight about the most?
Directions.

Today was supposed to be a day off, but it didn't quite work out. Right now we'll just say that I love to hate the KITTY HAWK. On the plus side, I paid off my new table, and it's coming tomorrow--I'm pretty excited. Do I need a table for eight? Probably not any time in the near or even not so near future.

Okay, so I like surveys, so here we go:

4. Who is the fourth missed call on your call log?
Mike Byrne

5. If you could change your eye color, what would you change it to?
I'm pretty attached to blue. Deeper or darker blue would be kind of cool, but I like what I've got.

I think hunting could be cool, but I've never really done it, nor do I really think I'll ever get into it.

So, I really like these little surveys. I can't really talk to you guys in real life, so we share little tidbits via Livejournal. I told myself once that I would only do one survey per year...but that got old, and then there were issues with picking the right one to do...and yeah, so, "Surveys for all my friends!"

1. Are you smiling?
Yes--I'm watching House. "Cheese is the devil's play thing."

On Saturday I met Mike and Kerry at a baseball game in Yokohama.

6. Are you any good at poker?
No.

7. What do you want?
Two cats, a Chipotle burrito, and California.

8. Are you tired?
Not yet, but my drugs should kick in about half an hour. I think I might be dependent on Tylenol PM for sleep in port, by the way. 9. Last spoken words you heard?
"Go home, Canby. See you tomorrow."

10. Have you ever kissed anyone named John?
No....let's make that a big no.

11. Besides your bed, what is your favorite thing in your room?
My bed is the only thing in my room....yeah, definitely a bachelor.

12. Pepsi or Coke?
Coke, no ice.

13. Did you ever throw up?
I last threw up in November before Thanksgiving--I remember it was a Wednesday.

Yes.

17. Is your computer a laptop?
Yes.

18. Are you allowed to stay up later than 10pm on a weeknight?
Yes.

19. How many myspace views do you have?
My computer blocked myspace...so, I have no idea.

21. Want to be a princess?
No.

22. Do you believe dreams come true?
Occasionally.

23. Last song you heard?
Baby you can drive my car...

24. Do you like Batman?
Yes...but it really bothers me that Mr. Wayne likes that girl that Tom Cruise married...REALLY bothers me--she ruined the movie for me.

25. Who is in the room with you?
No one.

26. Who's house did you go to last night?
Mine.

27. Who was the last person you told they're a fag?
I've never told anyone that, nor will I ever.

28. What was the last thing you ate?
Spaghetti...and a quarter of a pineapple.

29. What were you doing before this?
Cooking.

My feet are currently naked.

32. What instant messaging service do you use?
AIM or MSN.

33. What is your favorite website?
Hotmail, Amazon

34. What is/are your favorite pair of shoes?
I have an awesome pair of bates that are really comfortable.

35. What do you wear more, jeans or sweatpants?
Sweatpants--I haven't worn jeans since...wow...2003.

36. What is the last movie you watched?
Babel...which was really intriguing.

37. What do you currently hear right now?
christian bale, heels on the floor, and the keyboard.

38. When did you last buy a new pair of pants?
June 06.

39. Where’s your favorite place to be?
California

40. Where is your mom?
She's at home, asleep for another hour.

41. Where do you sleep?
I sleep in my bed at home, in my rack on the ship, or in my recliner in my living room...I love being a bachelor.

42. Where do you shop the most?
Amazon.

43. Where did you get the shirt you're wearing?
The NEX

44. Where was your default MySpace picture taken?
N/A

45. Why did you pick your background?
It's my ship.

46. Why did you kiss the last person you kissed?
She's my mom--I was going to miss her.

47. Are you happy with where you live?
No--I want California, English speaking neighbors, and yeah, so much more. Japan's okay, but I crave the Promised Land.

48. Do you believe that there are certain circumstances where cheating is ok?
No.

49. Would you ever take someone back if they cheated on you?
Almost definitely. At least, I would like to think so.

50. Have you ever talked about marriage with someone before?
Talked about marriage as in, "it might be in our future to be married"? No. I've spoken casually about being married as in, "Dana, you need to be married before you can own a cat." That's a pretty hefty pre-req to owning an animal, if you ask me.

51. Do you want someone you can't have?
I did once--Latter Day Saints are crafty people.

52. Do you believe love at first sight exists?
Ummm, I'm not really sure. I think I did once.

53. Do you believe in celebrating anniversaries?
Sure!

54. Do you believe that you can change someone?
I'm really not in the business of changing people--at least not intentionally.

55. Would you ever consider getting engaged or married right after school?
I'm past that deadline, but I would've considered it--I even had a crazy dream that I did. But I broke it off without telling her, and in my dream I felt bad because I was on the plane and she kept calling, so excited about different plans. I woke up before I told her we weren't getting married--sort of a bummer. I'm glad I didn't, by the way.

3:36 am - A testament to Japanese efficiency
Really, I guess it's a testimony:

This morning at 0457 when I left for work there was a beautiful asphalt street in front of my house. When I returned this evening at 1859, the beautiful road was gone. All the asphalt had been removed, the dirt/concrete base had been smoothed, and road hash marks had been painted on the concrete base. No construction signs, no street ripper-upper trucks anywhere, no dust, no street. How amazing are these folks?

I have gas!

The gas man came and hooked up my stove and oven and now...I realize that I have none of the required ingredients to bake/fry anything... I guess stove-top cooking will have to wait until Thursday...

10:09 am - Merry Christmas
Again the Ghost sped on, above the black and heaving sea--on and on--until being far away, as he told Scrooge, from any shore, they lighted on a ship. They stood beside te helmsman at the wheel, the look-out in the bow, the officers who had the watch; dark, ghostly figures in their several stations; but every man among them hummed a Christmas tune, or had a Christmas thought, or spoke below his breath to his companion of some bygone Christmas Day, with homeward hopes belonging to it. And every man on board, waking or sleeping, good or bad, had had a kinder word for one another on that day than any day in the year; and had shared to some extent in its festivities and had remembered those he cared for at a distance, and had known they delighted to remember him.

    +A great time

      *It's a small, small world...
+A lot of paperwork, a surprising amount of homework, but a good time was had by all
  -Housing!
    +Move in on Friday, 13OCT06
+Thrilled to call someplace other than USS COWPENS "home"
  -Priced Japanese furniture
+Ridiculous!  $700 for a couch for two people!?!?
+I seriously think the nails and screws in this furniture must be gold...how is a single mattress $693?
  -Work
+PS2 Oneth, admittedly my favorite, transferred.  I almost cried when he got his NAM.
+I am transferring to OI Division (Operations).  I'm going to miss Admin
  -Watch
    +OOD from 0200-0700.
+Normally unbearable, but HM2 Marshall--one of the corpsman from my division--was on with me
+Good chat about churches in the area, relationships onboard, PS2 Oneth
    +Surprisingly fast watch
  -Friday
+ENS James McAdams and I visit ENS Jen Bouzigard's house, which was great--her husband John is awesome.
+Learned great nacho recipe that I will definitely be utilizing in my house--since the gas won't be on for the first two months (long story)
  -Tomorrow
    +Half day of work
+Kamakura to see the Big Buddha and giant Shinto Shrine
-Really miss friends, family, home--sort of a lonely week despite all the activity.

I hope everything is going well for all of you.  By Friday I'll have three extra bedrooms, so please feel free to hop on a plane and visit!  ...just give me some notice, so that if I'm underway, I can leave the keys out.  Have a great week, take care, and God Bless!  DSC

Some people on my ship absolutely fell in love with Japan, and I'm really jealous of those people.  Japan is beautiful, but I miss California.

7:29 pm - Yokosuka, Week 2

Since last update:
-AOBICR
  *  Indoctrination Class covering life in Japan, driving, cultural ettiquette, how to use chopsticks.
  *  Passed Japanese Driving Exam.
-Sortie for Shanshan
  *  Typhoon "threatened" CFAY (Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka), so we all took out.
  *  Dozens of ships out in a matter of days--impressive
  *  I stayed behind to attend a Navy school
-Found a house!
  *  Two stories
  *  4.6 miles from the gate
  *  Wood floors
  *  Back door
  *  Full oven
+Japanese ovens are the size of shoe boxes--finding a US size oven was a huge accomplishment.
-Ja-Pun!
  *  GREAT musical play about life in Japan as a foreigner.
  *  It's a little odd for me every time I realize that I am the foreigner
  *  Went with three school teachers from Ikego Naval Base--an absolute riot
-Division Officer Leadership School
  *  One important piece of information a day
  *  Each cushioned by five hours of boredom
  *  Met some great people
-Going away party for PS2(AW) Kevin Oneth
  *  PS2 is one of my favorite people on the ship...only he didn't show up to his own party
  *  Despite the fact he didn't come, we still had an awesome karaoke contest, good food, and a good time overall
  *  My renditions of Dancing Queen (ABBA) and I'm Too Sexy (Right Said Fred) rocked the house
  *  ...but PS1(SW)'s rendition of Delilah worked me over...but he had the advantage of having had a few beers.
-Asian Bizarre at CFAY
  *  Tonnes of furniture from Korea, China, N. Japan, Thailand, and...Ireland(???)
  *  Lots of other more random stuff
  *  Bought some great dishes and mugs for cheap.
-This week
  *  Morale Officer School (Yes, I am the morale officer in USS COWPENS)
  *  Paperwork on the house (until I do the paperwork, I'm stuck on the ship)
  *  Navy Ball?
  *  Church

I hope that you're all having fine Navy days...I hope more that you all update so I know what's going on in your lives.  I hope most that Kyle updates--what happened to that guy?  Take care, God Bless.  DSC

  1. This is Dana updating from Forward Deployed Naval Forces Japan, which means that no one has an excuse anymore...
    Since saying good bye:

  2. Administration Officer onboard USS COWPENS (CG 63).  Great division, fun work, though I am probably unnecessary.

  3. Port visit Otaru-4th of the July in Otaru--fireworks, but not as many as in Catalina

  4. Underway -Port visit Singapore: They cane people there. Lots of shopping, very hot.

  5. Crossed the equator by boat.  Updated Navy trivia: Shellback status is only attained by crossing the equator by ship or sub. Whereas crossing the equator in any ship used to be enough, to meet US Navy regulations (there's an entry in service records for this) King Neptune MUST come aboard and must haze you before you get the card. I have been hazed, I am a shellback, all slimy pollywogs stand by to meet the wrath of the Raging Main.

  6. Port visit Fremantle / Perth Australia.  Favorite port visit.  Very nice people, lots of cool stuff.  Petted / photographed / spooned kangaroos.  Amazing diving--favorite of the cruise.

  7. Underway

  8. Port visit Pattya, Thailand.  Lots of prostitutes, mostly underaged.  Lots of cheap shopping, lots of bugs, lots of heat, lots of humidity.  On the plus side, great diving--got Advanced Open Water Diver qualled.   I have a book you can borrow about prostitutes if you like--very sad.

  9. Underway

  10. Inport Yokosuka Japan!  Finally "home."  Homesick for real home.  Nice to get emails from friends.  Looking for a place to live and think I found an amazing house.  Photos eventually if you email me.

  11. New email, by the way:  canbyds@cg63.navy.mil .  Please no spam, chain letters--only honest to goodness email.

  12. Please write often, visit if you can--I have a few spare rooms.  Make sure I'm in port first, though.

  13. Take care and have a very fine Navy day.  God Bless.  DSC
